Advancing work safety for pest control workers

Pest Practice at a glance

In some EU countries there is a clear lack of targeted and well-informed training programmes and learning opportunities for pest professionals, leading often to underestimation, limited understanding and knowledge about the risks involved for pest professionals themselves, as well as for their customers.

Pest control in urban areas has oftentimes become a necessity. The successful and safe control of pests such as rodents, spiders, cockroaches or mosquitos requires an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) system, and calls for well-trained pest control professionals. The IPM system monitors all targeted areas, identifies with accuracy the pest in concern and specifies the best options to control it and prevent its entry into food, water and harborage. However, in their attempt to be effective, pest control companies often employ potentially hazardous practices that include the extensive use of pesticides with un-estimated impact on human and animal health and the environment. Thus, obtaining competences and acquiring skills on how to safely apply dangerous chemicals are prerequisites for both an effective and systematic approach to pest control, as well as for the protection of human health and the environment.

The PEST PRACTICE project addresses these needs and raises awareness about the risks involved in pest control practices and applications by developing training material for professional users that promotes work safety and aims at better understanding of the risks associated with pest control operations. At the same time, PEST PRACTICE substantially heightens the levels of awareness among pest control business owners and their staff, keeping a firm eye on the improvement of work safety and the prevention of health risks with respect to pest workers and the general public alike.
